Citizens Academy

The Sheriff's Citizens Academy (SCA) was initiated by Sheriff Glenn Boyer to allow the citizens of Jefferson County to gain some insight and create a better understanding between the citizens and the Sheriff's Office. Each graduating class produces a growing number of citizens with first hand knowledge of the practices and procedures of the Sheriff's Office. All Law Enforcement topics are addressed in the classes but they are not meant to train the citizens to become police officers.

The classes create an awareness of all the criminal activity that the department deals with. They also demonstrate to the citizen what it takes to keep them safe in their homes and businesses as well as on the highways.

Each class is a cross section of citizens from all over the county. Men and Women of all ages and all occupations, as well as retired persons.

The first class completed the course on November 17, 1998 and consisted of 22 citizens. The classes are kept small so that each individual can have the opportunity to interact with the officers and have more input into the program.

There have now been Thirty-two classes that have completed the course. Each class lasts twelve weeks, one night a week for three hours. In order to receive a certificate, students must attend at least ten of the twelve classes. In addition, to the thirty six hours of instruction, students are given the opportunity to ride along with a patrol officer for four hours. This enables them to observe first hand, what an officer deals with on the street.

Our next class begins March 21, 2017 through June 6, 2017. ENROLL NOW.
